Ize of the world

I haven’t written anything in a while, I’m going to try and take this more lightly, tone down the perfectionism a bit (even if it wasn’t noticed lol), and chill it out as I write about the topics I love.

for as long as I can remember, I’ve always been intrigued by interesting music, the general theme of them, or their lyrics, I wasn’t very fond of the Clichy popular love songs, if I listen to them, it’s when I’m with friends and I just end up turning off my brain for the sake of enjoying them.

anyway, I don’t want to ramble for too long, I wanted to talk about a certain song by The Strokes, called (you guessed it) “Ize of the world”. the song was just amazing, in every aspect, but I want to focus today on its lyrics, for some reason, they spoke to me, to my brain, soul, and entire being, I’ll go over the main points I want to talk about in a sec, starting off with…

THE TITLE “IZE OF THE WORLD”

at first glance, you can read the title as “eyes of the world” as in the P.O.V of how our current world is going about, all the influences injected into the human brain throughout every stage of our lives, from a sperm, to a baby, to an adult, to an old hollow soul and, IZED into this chaotic greedy world, how did it come to this? or has it been like this for as long as we were brought to this world..

some lyrical highlights

“Sometimes it feels like the world is falling asleep.
How do you wake someone up from inside a dream?”

I liked this first part, it’s telling me, that the world is falling asleep, and going about in autopilot towards destruction and even more chaos, and we don’t know how to wake it up, because it’s too far gone, deep in its sleep, deep in its dream, how do you wake such a giant being from such slumber?

“Your mind would wander and search
For its place in the night.
Your body followed this feeling like following light.
Once that your music was born it followed you ‘round
and then it gave your activities meaning
and let you be loud.”

finally as all the noise settles, and subdue, your mind starts to wander, free of the world that’s trying to invade and influence every thought you have, your body is exhausted, so it just follows, you play on some music that you love (in this case this song), and let it course through your veins, looking for meaning in them, ruining from all the meaningless numbing outside world you just escaped from.

An egg to fertilize,
A pulse to stabilize,
A body to deodorize,
A life to scrutinize.
A child to criticize,
Young adults to modernize,
Citizens to terrorize,
Generations to desensitize.

This is where the “Ize” come into play, I loved the word play they did for the title, and here they show us the stages that the innocent person goes through, before he becomes the mindless sheep that they want him to be, do that to enough people simultaneously, and you’ll have modernized, insensitive, cruel, and heartless generation. this is the first glimpse we get of how the world sees us through its “eyes”.

Your dreams are sweet and obsessed
and you’re overworked.
You’re overtaken by visions of being overlooked.
How disappointed would D.(ead) I.(dealistic) D.(esperate)
I.(nventor) P.(ioneer) P.(hilosophers) be
to see such power in our hands all wasted on greed?

Following one of the best guitar riffs, we get this genius part right here, you’re finally integrated into society, where self acceptance is nonexisting, looking for recognition from others, sacrificing authenticity, creativity, honesty, hope and being true to ourselves, just how disappointed would the D.I.D.I.P.P be I wonder? all the power we have is being used to fulfil the shallow materialistic desires we have. Knowledge, wisdom, spirituality, art, all tossed down the grain and monetized. Which brings me to my favourite line in the song …

I am a prisoner to instincts or do my thoughts just live
as free and detached as boats to the dock?
Just like when music was born
and detached from your heart.
Is your free time to free minds or for falling apart?

You start to wonder if these are actually your instincts, and that it’s your true nature, or your thoughts are free, and if that is how things are supposed to be, so you isolate yourself to see, just to find that isolation with your full being, the good and the bad, can lead you to fall apart, go insane, not knowing what you’re supposed to be like, not fitting in, not understood, so are you freeing your mind? Or are you just dwelling in misery and despair?

Night after night you turn out the light.
You don’t fall asleep right away.
“Are we…are we done?”

you feel something is missing, as you turn out the light day after day, as if life is much than how the world is presenting it to be, these thoughts haunt, and prevent you from falling asleep right away… are we done?.. not yet…

A desk to organize,
A product to advertise,
A market to monopolize,
Movie stars to idolize,
Leaders to scandalize,
Enemies to neutralize,
No time to apologize,
Fury to tranquilize,
Weapons to synchronize,
Cities to vaporize.

i think this last part is self explanatory, they waged so many wars like this, because of this, sad I know.. but we’re just looking through the “eyes of our world” and the hollow reality of things really are…

-THANK YOU-
